College Recruiting Camp: How to Avoid the Bad Ones

There are more college recruiting camps than you could ever hope to attend. How do you decide which college recruiting camps are best for you?

At a lot of college recruiting camps, you will be offered some sort of instruction from college coaches. While this instruction is kind of cool, coming straight from college coaches themselves, it's not really that important.

You're goal at a college athlete recruiting camp is not to dramatically improve your skills. Sure, you might learn a thing or two, but the most important thing is to show off the skills that you already possess. Sometimes, a college recruiting camp offers instruction from coaches just so the coaches can see how you respond to coaching.

So, in general, you don't have to find a college recruiting camp that offers instruction from coaches.

A few pointers for finding a suitable college recruiting camp

  • Look for college coaches: The most important part of attending a college recruiting camp is exposure to college coaches. When trying to choose a camp, look for a list of coaches that will be in attendance. A college recruiting camp is more likely to be worth your while if coaches at several of your top colleges will be in attendance.

  • Find camps at colleges: If there is a school you are really interested in, one of the best ways to market yourself to that coach is to attend a camp at his/her school. This not only gives you a chance to expose yourself to a particular coach, it also gives usually gives you a chance to play on the field at that school.

  • Be wary: Not every camp is legit. Some camps won't have any coaches in attendance. Some camps are all about instruction. For the sake of getting recruited, that's not so good. And frequently, these camps can be some of the most expensive. Some camps send information out randomly, to anyone who might be even remotely interested. You typically will want to stay away from a camp you were invited to for no apparent reason.

If you keep these things in mind, you will have much better luck in your effort to find worthwhile college recruiting camps.
